BILL NUMBER:S2575
Title of bill
An act to amend the real property tax law, in relation to veterans' exemptions from taxation for local school purposes in cities with a population of one million or more
Purpose or general idea
To permit veterans to regain their school tax exemption which they had until June 1980.
Summary of specific provisions
Section 458 of the Real Property Tax Law would be amended to permit the school tax exemption for veterans to apply in the City of New York.
Justification
On June 12, 1980, the New York City Council separated the real property tax bills into two components, school and non-school rates. The change by the City Council may cost veterans as much as $200 in additional taxes per year. Veterans can least afford this increase and deserve the special benefit given them for the service they rendered to our state and country.
Fiscal implications for state and local governments
None to the State. New York City implication is to be determined.
Effective date
Immediately.
