BILL NUMBER:S2630
Title of bill
An act to amend the environmental conservation law, in relation to the inspection of shellfish beds
Purpose
This bill amends the fish and wildlife law to allow for shellfish companies to reimburse the Department of Environmental Conservation for the cost of inspections needed to open shellfish beds for harvest.
Summary of provisions
Section 1 amends the Environmental Conservation Law to allow shellfish companies to cover the State's cost for the inspection of a shellfish bed prior to harvesting.
Existing law
Currently, the Environmental Conservation Law does not allow for the hiring of contractors or reimbursement of State inspection costs required to open shellfish beds.
Justification
This legislation allows for shellfish businesses in our State to conduct the needed food safety and environmental inspections required by law when the Department of Environmental Conservation does not have the appropriate expertise on staff.
