BILL NUMBER:S282
Title of bill
An act to amend the parks, recreation and historic preservation law, in relation to providing free use of state parks for veterans and surviving spouses or domestic partners of those killed in combat
Purpose
Provides free use or state parks for veterans and surviving spouses or domestic partners of those killed in combat.
Section 1 parks, recreation and historic preservation law by adding section 13.20 to grant free access to state parks to military war veterans and surviving spouses or domestic partners of those killed in combat. Section 2 is the effective date.
State Parks provide the public with wonderful opportunities to appreciate the State's environment and natural resources and to participate in a wide variety of recreational opportunities. The State provides free access to these parks to certain groups, including seniors, the disabled and disabled veterans. Additionally, under the New York State Patriot Plan, free Empire Passports are available to members of the National Guard, military reserves and state militia who have had any period of active duty in support of the war on terrorism since 9/11/01. This bill recognizes the service of all veterans who have served our country during a time of war by granting them free access to state parks. This bill also extends this benefit to the surviving spouses or domestic partners of those killed in combat. In view of the sacrifices these individuals and their loved ones have made in service to our country, free access to state parks will allow veterans to fully enjoy the natural treasures they work so hard to protect.
