BILL NUMBER:S2914A
Title of bill
An act to amend the highway law, in relation to the designation of a portion of the state highway system to be known as the "Charles Varese Memorial Highway"
Purpose
This bill would designate the section of state route 25A in the village of Northport, county of Suffolk, as the "Charles Varese Memorial Highway".
Summary of provisions
This bill would add a new section, 343-y, to the highway law. The section would designate the section of state route 25A in the village of Northport, county of Suffolk, shall be known as the "Charles Varese Memorial Highway". The bill also directs the commissioner of transportation to provide for the installation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway, however the designation shall be one of a ceremonial nature and the official name of such highway shall not be changed as a result.
Justification
On April 15 of 2005 Charles Varese was killed on his way to the Northport Firehouse, where he bravely served his community as a volunteer firefighter. It is our duty to honor and memorialize those individuals who exemplify the highest of admirable qualities in men so that we may continue striving for greatness. Charles Varese's selfless acts in his service as a firefighter and community role model are a testament to his character. Men like Charles Varese are few and far between, and as such must be acknowledged
