BILL NUMBER:S3101 REVISED 05/31/11
Title of bill
An act to amend the town law, in relation to the removal of a fire commissioner for dereliction of duty
Purpose
To provide that fire district commissioners who have excessive unexcused absences may be removed from office.
Summary of provisions
Any fire district commissioner who fails to attend meetings of fire district commissioners may be removed from office.
Justification
Fire commissioners make most of the key decisions affecting fire and emergency medical service throughout New York State. Fire commissioners sit on boards which have the authority to raise taxes and approve budgets to cover expenses including insurance payroll, pensions and the purchase of trucks, and other equipment.
The commission members set policy for fire districts, provide for functions including parades, drills, funerals and inspections. They hire staff who maintain firehouses and dispatch calls.
Commissioners meet once a month and those meetings are open to the public. This legislation simply provides a procedure for removal of any fire district commissioner who has excessive unexcused absences.
