BILL NUMBER:S3227

Title of bill

An act to amend the real property tax law, in relation to providing an enhanced exemption for veterans regardless of income

Summary of provisions

Section 1: amends subdivision 4 of section 425 of the Real Property Tax Law as added by section 2 of part A of Chapter 56 of the Laws of 1998 by adding a new subparagraph (vii) providing that combat veterans, shall qualify for the enhanced STAR exemption without consideration of income.

Purpose and justification

With this bill, all senior combat veterans would be eligible for the enhanced STAR exemption on their homes. Combat veterans are currently entitled to receive a veteran's exemption for town and county taxes, but not for school taxes. This bill offers further recognition of the sacrifices that combat veterans made while serving in our military during times of war.
