BILL NUMBER:S3263A
Title of bill
An act to amend the town law, in relation to including the Fair Harbor fire district as among those districts that have elections on the second Tuesday in July
Purpose
To change the election date for the Fair Harbor fire district from December to July.
Summary of provisions
Section one of the bill amends Town Law §175(1) to change the date for Fair Harbor fire district elections from the second Tuesday in December to the second Tuesday in July. Section two provides the effective date.
Existing law
Currently, elections for the Fair Harbor fire district are held on the second Tuesday in December.
Justification
Fair Harbor is a seasonal community on Fire Island in Suffolk County where many of the property owners do not reside year-round, making it difficult for the residents to participate in their local fire district elections. In the interest of democracy and expanding the rights of registered voters in the district, the Fair Harbor Fire District Board of Commissioners has requested this change. Having elections on the second Tuesday in July will increase citizen participation in local fire district elections and will bring Fair Harbor in line with most other fire districts on Fire Island.
