BILL NUMBER:S3799
Title of bill
An act to amend the criminal procedure law, in relation to designating park rangers of the town of Brookhaven as peace officers
Purpose
To designate park rangers of the town of Brookhaven as peace officers.
Summary of provisions
Amends Section 2.10 of the Criminal Procedure Law to add new subdivision which would grant Peace Officer status to the town of Brookhaven Park Rangers.
Justification
The Town of Brookhaven maintains 199 parks containing some 20,000 acres. The Brookhaven park rangers are charged with patrolling the parks and enforcing applicable town and state laws. This bill, requested by the town, would allow the rangers to fulfill that mission. The park rangers receive training through the Suffolk County Sheriff's Peace Officer Academy. This legislation does not authorize the rangers to carry firearms.
