BILL NUMBER:S3854

Title of bill

An act to amend the executive law, in relation to information on persons applying to be an auxiliary police officer

Summary of provisions

This bill authorizes the Division of Criminal Justice Services to perform background checks on those applying as auxiliary police officers in local police departments. Amends Section 837-c subdivision b of the executive law to allow police departments to forward descriptive data and fingerprints of candidates for auxiliary police duty to D.C.J.S. for processing

Justification

Section 837-c of the executive law currently allows D.C.J.S. to perform background checks on persons applying for employment with police departments. The language of this section, however, currently makes no provision for similar checks to be performed on persons applying as auxiliary police. Including auxiliary police officers among those eligible for background checks by D.C.J.S. would allow police departments to properly screen candidates for auxiliary police.
