BILL NUMBER:S4211
Title of bill
An act to amend the education law, in relation to allowing certain schools to contract with BOCES for criminal background checks
Purpose or general idea of bill
This bill would allow non-public schools to enter into contracts with BOCES schools for the processing of fingerprints in relation to criminal background checks.
Summary of specific provisions
Section 1 amends the education law to allow non-public schools to enter into contracts with BOCES schools for the processing of fingerprints in relation to criminal background checks.
Justification
Current law allows non-public schools to contract with BOCES to process pupil personnel records but not to process background checks for teachers. Allowing these schools to contract with BOCES to process fingerprints and criminal background checks would ensure the safety of students. The state must make that all teachers have been properly screened. Non-public schools will pay the costs.
