BILL NUMBER:S4235
Title of bill
An act to amend the executive law, in relation to developing and promoting senior center based domestic violence prevention programs
Purpose or general idea of bill
This bill would direct the NYS Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (OPDV) to develop domestic violence prevention programs to be utilized by senior centers throughout the state.
Summary of specific provisions
Section 1 adds a new paragraph to subdivision 3 of section 575 of the executive law.
Section 2 sets the effective date.
Justification
With a growing concern regarding elder abuse in this state, it is also important to remain aware of the occurrence of domestic violence amongst senior citizens. Senior centers serve as a gathering place for many seniors in their community, making them an ideal environment to offer domestic violence prevention programs. Developing prevention programs designed specifically for seniors will be especially helpful as seniors often are more reluctant to seek out help when it comes to such sensitive issues.
Prior legislative history
This is a new bill.
Fiscal implications
Minimal, programs already in existence would simply be altered to meet the needs of seniors citizens.
Effective date
This act shall take effect immediately.
