BILL NUMBER:S4248
Title of bill
An act in relation to term of service of trustee-elects of the Mount Vernon board of education during the 2011 and 2012 elections
Purpose or general idea of bill
To minimize the cost factor in school board trustee elections and to provide an easier flow of trustees to the school board.
Summary of specific provisions
Section 1 states that for the May 2011 Mt. Vernon School Board elections, when four trustee seats are elected, the trustee-elect who obtains the fourth highest vote total shall be appointed to serve a term of two years. For the May 2012 Mt. Vernon school Board elections, when four trustee seats are elected, the trustee-elect who obtains the fourth highest vote total shall be appointed to serve a one year term.
Justification
Trustees for the Mt. Vernon School Board are elected every three years. Currently, voters elect four trustees one year, four trustees the following year and one trustee the third year. This legislation will prevent the inequity in the number of trustees elected each year. This legislation will also improve voter turnout because voters will elect three trustees for each term cycle compared to one trustee in a term cycle.
