BILL NUMBER:S4770
Title of bill
An act authorizing the assessor of the town of Rockland to accept applications for exemption from real property taxation from the Roscoe-Rockland fire district
Purpose
To allow the Board of Assessors of the Town of Rockland to accept an application for tax exemption from the Roscoe-Rockland Fire District.
Summary of provisions
Authorizes the Board of Assessors of the Town of Rockland to accept an application for tax exemption from the Roscoe-Rockland Fire District notwithstanding that such application is otherwise untimely. For the parcels identified as lots 33.-1-43.2, 33.-1-44 and 33.-1-45.
Existing law
Does not allow the Board to accept an application for tax exemption outside the statutorily prescribed dates.
Justification
The Roscoe-Rockland Fire District acquired title with financial capital assistance from the State of New York to certain real property after taxable status date. The property is in the Town of Rockland. The Fire District is rural and has a minimal real property tax base. The purchase of the property was complicated by the delays in receiving the capital grant of $600,000 which was provided in Governor Paterson's 2009 budget. The tax bill they are liable for is approximately $31,078. That $31,078 would be better spent on firefighter equipment.
The Town of Rockland has provided a Resolution dated February 3, 2011 in support of this legislation.
