BILL NUMBER:S5060B

Title of bill

An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system in the village of Sherman as the "Alfred F. Jones Memorial Bridge"

Purpose

To designate the bridge on State Route 76 crossing Interstate 86 in the Village of Sherman, County of Chautauqua, as the "Alfred F. Jones Memorial Bridge".

Summary of provisions

Section 1. Adds a new subdivision (z) to Section 343 of the highway law designating the bridge on State Route seventy-six, also known as Osborne Street, which crosses over Interstate Route eighty-six, in the Village of Sherman, County of Chautauqua, as the "Alfred F. Jones Memorial Bridge."

Section 2. Provides that the Commissioner of the Department of Transportation shall provide for the installation and maintenance of adequate signage reflecting the ceremonial designation of this bridge as the "Alfred F. Jones Memorial Bridge."

Justification

Alfred F. Jones was an individual who exemplified community service. He served in the military as a World War II Tank Commander in the 751st Tank Battalion. After serving his country, Mr. Jones returned to Mayville where he devoted most of his adult life to the promotion and development of Western New York.

His crowning achievement was the completion of Interstate Route 86. Starting in 1990, then Chautauqua County Legislator Alfred F. Jones and his colleagues began an advocacy campaign for the completion of what they referred to as the "Missing link," a 20 mile stretch of I-86 that remained a two lane highway. These efforts would unite people and political forces from all over Western New York behind the singular goal of finishing the four lane expressway that would provide valuable economic stimulus to the region.

This bill would memorialize the Route 76 bridge which passes over Interstate 86 as the "Alfred F. Jones Memorial bridge". Because the memorial signs will be visible to motorists on Interstate 86 it will serve to honor his perseverance and dedication to the completion of I-86 as well as his contributions to Chautauqua County during his many years of public service.
