BILL NUMBER:S5613

Title of bill

An act to amend the labor law, in relation to protection of certain hotel and motel employees

Purpose or general idea of bill

To protect hotel and motel workers from assault on the job.

Summary of specific provisions

Section 1 adds a new section 202-1 to the labor law requiring hotel and motel owners or managing agents in New York State to provide each hotel or motel employee who regularly enters hotel or motel rooms with a personal electronic device capable of notifying hotel or motel management of an emergency at the push of a single button.

Section 2 requires the legislation to take effect on the one hundred eightieth day after it shall have become a law.

Justification

Hotel and motel housekeepers are vulnerable to on-the-job assaults, as they often work alone. This bill would provide hotel and motel workers with the ability to protect themselves by instantly alerting hotel or motel security of an emergency situation.

New legislation.

Fiscal implications for state and local governments

None.

Effective date

180 days after it shall have become a law.
