BILL NUMBER:S5719A
Title of bill
An act to authorize the county of Broome to offer an optional twenty year retirement plan to deputy sheriffs Richard Merrell and Frederick Akshar
Purpose or general idea of bill
To re-open the Provisions of Section 552 of the Retirement and Social Security Law in order for the Broome County Legislature to correct an error wherein Richard Merrell and Frederick Akshar were inadvertently left out of the twenty year retirement option authorized by a Labor Agreement between the Broome County Legislature and the Broome County Sheriffs Law Enforcement Officers Association Local 8500 by Resolution 684 of 2006.
Summary of specific provisions
Richard Merrell and Frederick Akshar, who are each employed as a deputy sheriff in Broome County, and are each a member of the New York State and Local Employees Retirement System, shall each be eligible to individually join the special retirement plan for sheriffs, undersheriffs and deputy sheriffs if on or before December 31, 2011, they file a written request with the State Comptroller to that effect.
Justification
Through no fault of their own, these individuals failed to make such election to join such retirement plan at the time of implementation.
