BILL NUMBER:S6032

Title of bill

An act to amend chapter 774 of the laws of 1950, agreeing with the state of New Jersey with respect to rules and regulations governing traffic on vehicular crossings operated by the port of New York authority, in relation to discounted tokens issued to senior citizens

Purpose

To give senior citizens a fifty-percent discount for bridge and tunnel tolls.

Summary of provisions

Section one amends chapter 774 of the laws of 1950, agreeing with the state of New Jersey with respect to rules and regulations governing traffic on vehicular crossings operated by the New York port authority, is amended by adding a new section 2-a giving senior citizens a 50% discount for Port Authority bridge and tunnel tolls.

Justification

Senior citizens, many of which are living on fixed incomes, have worked hard all their lives. The recent toll hikes by the Port Authority and the downturn in the economy has placed a heavy financial burden on them. Their incomes cannot keep pace with the today's rising cost of living. Seniors with their fixed incomes are facing higher utility, food and other costs and it is getting more difficult to make ends meet. Seniors also spend a disproportionate amount of their income on doctor bills and prescription drugs. Many seniors have seen their life savings dwindle with the downturn in the stock market. This legislation recognizes the hardships that many seniors face today. This bill will assist them by reducing the cost of Port Authority bridge and tunnel tolls by 50%. Our seniors have sacrificed on numerous occasions and this bill recognizes that sacrifice by allowing them a bridge and tunnel toll reduction.
