BILL NUMBER:S6083
Title of bill
An act to amend the education law, in relation to research institutes on addiction
Purpose
To provide statutory protection for the University at Buffalo Research Institute on Addictions that are equivalent to other similar institutes and centers.
Summary of specific provisions
Section 1 amends Section 5200 of the education law to state that funds made available to the University at Buffalo Research Institute on Addictions be made available for the support of the institute in the amount appropriated and that funds shall not be appropriated or transferred for any other purpose.
Section 2 is the effective date.
Justification
By having statutory protections similar to those afforded to Cody Center would ensure that money allocated for these institutions is spent for its intended purposes, this legislation seeks to provide equal protection. Since 1970 the RIA has been an internationally renowned research institute that studies the nature, consequences, prevention, and treatment of additive behaviors, specifically alcohol abuse, drug abuse, and pathological gambling. In addition, the RIA contributes to the educational mission of UB through its federally funded postdoctoral research training program on alcohol etiology and treatment.
