BILL NUMBER:S6149A

Title of bill

An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to requiring signage alerting motorists of red light cameras; and providing for the repeal of such provisions upon expiration thereof

Purpose

This legislation would require signage alerting motorists of red light cameras in the areas where red light camera demonstration programs have been authorized.

Summary of provisions

The vehicle and traffic law is amended to add a new section 1111-d to require signage alerting motorists of red light cameras in the areas where red light camera demonstration programs have been authorized. Such signage will warn motorists that a traffic controlled signal photo violation monitoring device is operating at such intersection.

Justification

Red light cameras are installed to improve intersection safety by reducing the number of red light violations. The placement of warning signs will enhance this purpose by warning motorists of their presence and will lead to safer roadways for all New York drivers.

This legislation requires that signs be posted at intersections equipped with red light camera.
