BILL NUMBER:S6306 REVISED 03/08/12

Title of bill

An act to amend the town law, in relation to the Monsey fire district in Rockland county

Purpose

To allow for the Monsey Fire District to be exempt from the requirement that no more than forty-five percent of the company's membership be of non-resident members.

Summary of provisions

Section 1: Adds the Monsey Fire District of Rockland County as a fire company that is exempt from the requirement that no more than forty-five percent of its membership consist of non-resident members.

Justification

In this economic climate it is very difficult for some volunteer fire companies to recruit new members. Monsey Fire District is falling near this number. Because of the make-up of the district there are members who live just over the boarder that can respond to fire calls faster than members that live further out in this district. If the Monsey fire district is not exempt from this requirement it runs the risk of losing valuable members of their district. This requirement will be placing a hardship on the district and merits exempting the Monsey Fire District from this membership requirement.
