BILL NUMBER:S6362

Title of bill

An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to prohibiting motor vehicles engaged in retail sales of frozen desserts directly to consumers from turning right at red lights

Purpose

This bill will prohibit motor vehicles engaged in retail sales of frozen desserts directly to consumers from turning right at red lights.

Summary of provisions

Subparagraph a of paragraph 2 of subdivision (d) of section 1111 of the vehicle and traffic law, as separately amended by chapters 230 and 420 of the laws of 1980 is amended to prohibit motor vehicles engaged in retail sales of frozen desserts directly to consumers from turning right at red lights.

Justification

This bill seeks to increase safety for those who take advantage of ice cream truck services. While these trucks are enjoyed by many, safety problems can arise when children dart into traffic to purchase ice cream or race each other to get to the trucks first.

This problem could be compounded if children start to approach a temporarily stopped truck that then advances right on a red light. To prevent a potential tragedy, this legislation would prohibit these vehicles from turning right at red lights.
