BILL NUMBER:S6366A
Title of bill
An act to amend the general municipal law and the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to the regulation of taxicabs, limousines, and livery vehicles in Suffolk county
Purpose
This legislation would allow the County of Suffolk to adopt ordinances regulating the registration of taxicabs, limousines and livery vehicles.
Summary of provisions
Subdivision 1 of section 181 of the general municipal law, as amended by Chapter 430 of the Laws of 2003 is amended to allow Suffolk County to adopt local ordinances regulating the registration of taxicabs, limousines and livery vehicles.
Justification
Chapter 549 of the Laws of 2006 requires any taxi or limousine company to be licensed with the City of New York in order to pre-arrange pick-ups and drop-offs in New York City. Licensing requires that companies meet strict criteria, including a ten fleet minimum.
Current law puts smaller limousine and taxi companies in neighboring counties at a disadvantage, as they are unable to schedule pre-arranged trips to New York City.
This legislation would allow Suffolk County to set its own standards and practices with regard to the registration of taxicabs, limousines and livery vehicles.
