BILL NUMBER:S6500
Title of bill
An act to amend the public health law, in relation to requiring general hospitals with a newborn nursery or providing obstetric services to offer Bordetella pertussis vaccinations to certain persons
Purpose or general idea of bill
Requires general hospitals that have a newborn nursery or provide obstetric services to offer vaccination against Bordetella pertussis (whooping cough) to parents and anticipated caregivers of hospitalized newborns.
Summary of provisions
Section 1 amends Public Health Law §2805-h to provide that each general hospital having a newborn nursery or providing obstetric services to offer to every parent, person in parental relation or other person who is reasonably anticipated to be a caregiver of a newborn treated in the hospital vaccination against Bordetella pertussis (whooping cough).
Section 2 provides the act take effect 180 days after its enactment.
Justification
Newborns are at very high risk of disability or death should they contract whooping cough. Inasmuch as these delicate newborns may be exposed to whooping cough after birth, it is appropriate for parents and persons in parental relation to be offered the whooping cough vaccine by the hospital in which their newborns are being treated.
