BILL NUMBER:S6647

Title of bill

An act to amend the executive law, in relation to adding the Buffalo River to the definition of inland waterways

Purpose

This bill will have the Buffalo River included as one of the state's major rivers and to be considered a inland water way.

Summary of specific provisions

This bill will amend section 1, paragraph (b) of subdivision 4 of section 911 of the executive law.

Justification

The Buffalo River plays an important role in Erie County as it enters the lake between the United States Coast Guard station and the Erie Basin Marina. The Buffalo River is also listed on the Great Lake Areas of concern which show severe environmental degradation. Being classified as inland water way would help to provide federal funds to restore and protect the river.
