BILL NUMBER:S6705
Title of bill
An act to amend the environmental conservation law, in relation to hunting by crossbow in the county of Cortland
Purpose
To permit the use of crossbows for hunting big game during the regular southern tier big game season.
Summary of provisions
Amends current law section 11-0907 to conform Cortland County to other counties for participation in the experimental crossbow season that expires December 31, 2012, or, if crossbow authorization is extended, the bill would expire on January 1, 2014, when last year's bill (S.1683A) authorizing the use of rifles for hunting big game expires.
Existing law
Cortland County was left out of legislation permitting the use of crossbows for big game hunting.
Justification
While crossbow hunting was extended on an experimental basis in 2011 for the 2011 and 2012 big game seasons, Cortland County was not included.
Both sportsmen and the Cortland County Legislature have requested that the use of crossbows be included in the list of permissible weapons with which to hunt big game so that Cortland County conforms to other counties where the use of crossbows is permitted.
Legislative history
New bill.
Fiscal implications
None to the state. May increase revenue to the Conservation Fund.
Effective date
This act shall take effect immediately and shall expire and be deemed repealed on the earlier of either the date on which item (j) of paragraph a of subdivision 2 of section 11-0907 of the environmental conservation law is repealed pursuant to chapter 323 of the laws of 2011, or the date on which chapter 483 of the laws of 2010 expires and is repealed pursuant to section 17 of such chapter.
