BILL NUMBER:S6799
Title of bill
An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to forms of identification cards and licenses of veterans
Purpose
This bill will allow for veterans, who submit the proper paperwork, to be provided a space on the New York State driver's license that indicates they are a veteran of the United States Armed Forces.
Summary of provisions
Subparagraph i states that the Commissioner shall provide space so that an applicant may request a notation on such identification card that he or she is a veteran of the United States armed forces.
Subparagraph b establishes parameters of who is eligible for this status and what documents are required to receive this status. It also establishes that there Will be no additional cost to the individual applying for this status.
Subdivision a-1 states that veterans who have applied for this provision in the past, will receive it upon future renewals with no additional cost to the applicant.
Existing law
Section One - Subparagraph (1) of paragraph (a) and paragraph (b) of subdivision 3 of section 490 of the vehicle and traffic law, subparagraph (i) of paragraph (a) as amended by chapter 235 of the laws of2002, and paragraph (b) as amended by chapter 600 of the laws of 1989.
Justification
Many local businesses provide discounts to veterans. This legislation would provide for an easily identifiable way of businesses determining who is a veteran of the United States armed forces. This would also be an easy form of ID for the veteran to carry with them.
