BILL NUMBER:S6833

Title of bill

An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to authorizing the town of North Salem, in the county of Westchester, to regulate speed limits on town highways

Purpose or general idea of bill

Provides for the Town of North Salem, County of Westchester, to control the speed limits on town highways.

Summary of specific provisions

Section 1: The first undesignated paragraph of section 1662-a of the Vehicle and Traffic Law is designated subdivision 1 and a new subdivision 2 is added to provide that the town board of North Salem may establish speed limits on town highways in such town, other than state or county highways maintained by the state or county department of transportation. No such speed limit shall be established at less than twenty-five miles per hour, except for school zone speed limits, which may be established at not less than fifteen miles per hour.

Justification

The purpose of this legislation is to provide the Town of North Salem the authority to lower speed limits at their discretion on town roads. Town officials are familiar with local roads, conditions, and safety concerns of their citizens, and are thus well-positioned to set speed limits on town roads.
