BILL NUMBER:S7323A
Title of bill
An act in relation to the conveyance of land formerly used as an armory to the town of Brookhaven, county of Suffolk
Purpose or general idea of bill
To direct the Commissioner of General Services to transfer the former NYS Armory to the Town of Brookhaven to enhance public safety and afford the Town an opportunity to continue to improve the recreational youth programs hosted at the former NYS Armory site.
Summary of specific provisions
Section 1 authorizes the commissioner of General Services to convey land formerly used as an armory to the Town of Brookhaven in consideration of one dollar.
Section 2 gives a description of the property.
Section 3 requires an application within one year of the act.
Section 4 provides that the property shall be used for public safety, general municipal uses, highway department uses, and recreation. Upon termination of said use, the land shall revert to the State.
Justification
As the use of this property as an armory has been discontinued, the Town of Brookhaven desires to acquire the property and use the property and buildings on the site for general municipal and recreation purposes by the town Highway and Parks and Recreation Departments.
The improvements that exist on the site in the main building are well suited for use as a recreation and community center. In addition, the older building to the rear of the property and the nearby paved area with a repair and storage yard are useful for many municipal government purposes.
This site is centrally located in the Town near two local schools that would benefit from recreational opportunities at this facility.
