BILL NUMBER:S7430
Title of bill
An act to authorize the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe, to offer a certain retirement plan to certain police officers
Purpose
To authorize the City of Rochester to make the benefits of Section 384-d of the Retirement and Social Security Law available to certain police officers employed by such city.
Summary of provisions
Section 1 of the bill authorizes the City of Rochester to make the benefits of Section 384-d of the Retirement and Social Security Law available to certain police officers employed by the City who are currently enrolled in a different retirement plan. Section 2 of the bill requires the costs associated with such legislation to be borne by the City of Rochester and further authorizes the City to amortize such costs over a 10 year period. Section 3 of the bill provides for an immediate effective date.
Existing law
The vast majority of police officers employed by the City of Rochester are participants in the Section 384-d retirement plan of the Retirement and Social Security Law.
Justification
This legislation would simply allow those police officers employed by the City of Rochester who failed to make a timely election to receive the benefits of Section 384-d of the Retirement and Social Security Law to elect to receive such benefits. There are currently 8 police officers employed by the City of Rochester who failed to elect to receive the benefits of Section 384-d of the Retirement and Social Security Law in a timely manner. The enactment of this legislation would simply allow these police officers, who perform the same exact duties as their fellow colleagues who are currently enrolled in Section 384-d of the Retirement and Social Security Law, to be covered by the same retirement plan.
