BILL NUMBER:S7485A

Title of bill

An act to amend the public officers law, in relation to residency requirements for peace officers employed by Cornell University

Purpose

To allow for Cornell University to hire campus police officers that are assigned to the Ithaca campus who live outside of Tompkins County.

Summary of provisions

Amends section 3 of the public officers law by adding a new subdivision 59, allowing for a peace officer employed by Cornell University and assigned to the Ithaca campus to reside outside of Tompkins County, provided that such person reside in the state of New York.

Existing law

Existing law requires a person to be a resident of the political subdi- vision or municipal corporation of the state for which he or she shall be chosen, or within which his or her official functions are required.

Justification

In order to improve hiring, and allow for greater freedom of residency location, this legislation would allow for Cornell University police officers assigned to the Ithaca campus to reside outside of Tompkins County, and still perform their official functions at the university.

Legislative history

New bill.

Fiscal implications

None to the state.

Effective date

This act shall take effect immediately.
