BILL NUMBER:S7537A
Title of bill
An act to amend the public authorities law, in relation to authorizing the Suffolk county water authority to sell water in bulk at public events at its regular retail rates or other reasonable rates
Purpose
To authorize the Suffolk county water authority to sell water in bulk at public events at its regular retail rates.
Summary of provisions
Section 1 of the bill amends subdivision 5 of section 1078 of the public authorities law to authorize the Suffolk county water authority to sell water in bulk to any not-for-profit corporation, public corporation, private corporation or person at its regular retail rates. Section 2 provides the effective date.
Justification
Under subdivision 5 of section 1078 of the public authorities law, the Suffolk County water authority is currently authorized to purchase water in bulk from any person, private corporation or municipality when necessary and convenient for the operation of its water supply system. However, public authorities law section 1078 is silent as to whether the water authority may sell water in bulk to such entities. There are a number of areas in Suffolk County where events are sponsored for the public but public water supply mains are not available to provide a safe supply of drinking water to such event. The bill would make it clear that the Suffolk County water authority is authorized to provide drinking water in bulk to such events at its regular retail rates.
