BILL NUMBER:S7704
Title of bill
An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the Taconic State Parkway as the "Westchester County Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway"
Purpose
Designates a portion of the Taconic State Parkway as the "Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway".
Summary of provisions
Section one of this legislation amends the highway law by adding a new section 343-z which designates a portion of the state highway system in the towns of New Castle and Yorktown in Westchester County, as the West- chester County Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway.
Section two of this legislation directs the commissioner of transporta- tion to provide for the installation of appropriate signage.
Section three of this legislation states the effective date.
Justification
When North Korean troops invaded South Korea on June 25,1950, the United States took immediate action to defend the freedom of the people of South Korea. American troops fought valiantly against the cruelty and repression of a communistic regime. More than 1.7 million Americans faced foreboding terrain and extremely harsh combat conditions in battles such as Pork Chop Hill, Heartbreak Ridge, the Pusan Perimeter, and the Chosin Reservoir.
Thanks to the American Veterans of the Korean War who fought with extraordinary honor, skill and courage the attempt to establish commun- ism was turned back. The Military Agreement of July 27, 1953, ended 3 bitter years of warfare.
For many years the Korean War and those decent American citizens of Westchester who fought, died and bled there in what some have come to call "The Forgotten War" have never been completely recognized for the remarkable achievements they made in that faraway land. As it states on the National Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C., "freedom is not free."
It is imperative we ensure that they are no longer forgotten. By dedi- cating the Taconic State Parkway in Westchester as the Korean War Veter- ans Memorial Highway, those who answered the call to defend freedom in the Korean War will long be remembered.
