BILL NUMBER:S1897A

Title of bill

An act to amend the transportation law, in relation to providing fares free of charge to certain correction officers on passenger transportation facilities operated by certain public transportation authorities

Purpose or general idea of bill

To allow New York city correction officers to ride public transportation at no charge in cities with a population of one million or more.

Summary of specific provisions

Adds a new section 135-a to Transportation Law to allow New York City correction officers to ride public transportation including the Long Island Rail Road and all others within the city of New York at no charge.

Justification

While crime has dropped in NYC, the number of crimes in the subway has not dropped as it has above ground. By offering a "free ride" to the correction officers in NYC, we are encouraging these officers to ride the transit systems, knowing that police officers can't be everywhere. So having officers with corrections training would more than offset the costs involved by having these officers nearby in case of an emergency. This legislation would encourage a greater number of officers to ride our cities' buses and subways thereby enhancing security and ultimately deterring crime.
