BILL NUMBER:S2775

Title of bill

An act to amend the education law, in relation to the election districts in the city of Lockport school district

Purpose or general idea of bill

The purpose of this bill is to permit the Lockport City School District to have one election district.

Summary of specific provisions

This bill would amend section 2604 of the education law to allow the Lockport City School District to desig- nate the entire city school district as a single election district.

Justification

The existence of one central voting place provides bene- fits to a school district and to its residents. An important benefit of a central location is that it eliminates confusion as to where to vote. A central location may also provide for improved accessibility through greater parking capacity and the ability to provide numerous voting machines at the location. This is a convenience for the residents. Unfortunately, current law does not allow a district with more than 10,000 inhabitants to have just one centrally located election district. This legislation remedies this situation for the Lockport City School District.
