BILL NUMBER:S3210A

Title of bill

An act to amend the legislative law, in relation to creating a cost of living adjustment to be applied to the salaries of members of the legislature

Purpose

To adjust the salaries of members of the legislature in congruence with the cost of living adjustment.

Summary of provisions

Section 1. creates a new section of the legislative law to alter the salaries of members of the Legislature based upon the increases or decreases in the median household income for the state for the preceding two year period.

Justification

This bill ties the salaries of members of the legislature with the economic growth of the state. Consequently, this bill incentivizes the members of the legislature to promote policies that increase the median household income. This bill is modeled after the Article 118 of the Massachusetts Constitution which mandates that members of the state legislature receive wage increases.
