BILL NUMBER:S3414
Title of bill
An act to amend the general business law, in relation to disclosure of social security numbers
Purpose or general idea of bill
The purpose of this bill is to amend a chapter of the laws of 2012 relating to the disclosure of social securi- ty numbers.
Summary of specific provisions
This bill would amend the general busi- ness law by removing disclosure restrictions placed on numbers derived from a social security number and would permit disclosure of social security numbers collected in furtherance of compliance with a federal, state, or local law or regulation.
Justification
In place of using social security numbers, some entities use alternate identification numbers that are associated with an indi- vidual's social security number. This bill would specifically permit the use of this identification number.
Further, this bill would allow the use of a social security number if it is used in order to comply with a federal, state, or local law or regu- lation.
