Purpose
To appropriately commemorate the historic walk over the Niagara River Gorge accomplished by Nik Wallenda on June 15, 2012.
Summary of provisions
Section 1 of the bill directs the office of parks, recreation and historic preservation to install a permanent plaque, monument or other marker commemorating the historic traverse of the Niagara River Gorge on a high wire by Mr. Nik Wallenda.
Section 2 of the bill authorizes the office of parks, recreation and historic preservation to promulgate regulations to implement this act.
Section 3 of the bill is the effective date.
Justification
In 2011, New York State enacted Chapter 572 of the Laws of 2011 to authorize the traverse of the Niagara River Gorge by Nik Wallenda. On June 15, 2012, Nik Wallenda became the first man in over 100 years to accomplish this amazing and historic feat. The occasion was an unprecedented event drawing tens of thousands of people to Niagara Falls, New York and generating a multi-million dollar economic impact.
The state of New York should commemorate this historic event without delay by installing a permanent monument or marker on the location with- in the Niagara Falls State Park where Nik Wallenda commenced his high wire walk. By directing the office of parks, recreation and historic preservation to install a permanent monument in this manner, this legis- lation will help ensure the proper and timely commemoration of Nik Wallenda's historic walk while simultaneously providing visitors to the Niagara Falls State Park with an interesting and enjoyable attraction.
