BILL NUMBER:S3804
Title of bill
An act in relation to discontinuing the collection of certain tolls at the Grand Island bridges in the Niagara section of the New York state thruway
Purpose or general idea of the bill
at the South Grand Island bridge.
Summary of specific provisions
Section 1 of this bill removes the toll barrier at the South Grand Island bridge without increasing the toll amount collected at the barrier of the North Grand Island bridge.
Section 2 states the effective date of the ninetieth day after it shall have become law.
Justification
The Grand Island Bridges are the only way to travel on to and off of Grand Island. This toll is an unjustified tax on residents of Grand Island, who have no other means by which to travel to and from their Grand Island homes. Grand Island boasts a state park, many restaurants, camping areas, a theme park and golf courses; all of these attractions would benefit from no tolls at the South Grand Island bridge. The elimination of the Grand Island Thruway toll barrier on the South entrance to the island will alleviate the traffic congestion and eliminate the wait that commuters and other travelers often face. Currently at the South Grand Island tolls, trucks are often stuck in traffic for long periods of time missing their delivery times and costing businesses time and money. Furthermore, it would serve to improve air quality by reducing the idle time of running automobiles. All four bridges connecting Grand Island to both Erie and Niagara county are constantly undergoing bridge work, but the bridge at the South entrance to the island is in the worst shape because of the stress the bridge is under with the traffic either sitting or trucks trying to get up to speed after stopping for the tolls.
