BILL NUMBER:S4092
Title of bill
An act to authorize Hands Across Long Island, Inc. to retroactively apply for a real property tax exemption for certain prop- erty in the census-designated place of Ronkonkoma, town of Brookhaven, county of Suffolk
Purpose
To authorize Hands Across Long Island, Inc. to file for a property tax exemption for property owned within the Town of Brookhaven.
Summary of provisions
This bill would authorize the assessor of the Town of Brookhaven to accept from Hands Across Long Island an applica- tion or renewal application for exemption from real property taxes as if made pursuant to 420-a of the Real Property Tax Law. If satisfied that Hands Across Long Island, Inc. would otherwise have been entitled to such exemption, the assessor is authorized to grant the same, and cancel all remaining unpaid taxes, interest, related fines and penalties.
Justification
Hands Across Long Island, Inc. has purchased a piece of real property located in the Town of Brookhaven for the purpose of providing mental health services to the community. It is intended by this bill to undo the hardships that will be suffered if the organiza- tion is required to pay property taxes that would otherwise not be due, if the organization had submitted their application for exemption in a timely manner.
