BILL NUMBER:S4380C
Title of bill
An act to amend the retirement and social security law, in relation to allowing an eligible member of the public retirement system to obtain service credit for certain military service if such person has two years of credited service
Purpose or general idea of bill
This bill would allow eligible members of the public retirement system to buy back service credit for their military service with two years of credited service instead of five years.
Summary of specific provisions
Subdivision 3 of section 1000 of the retirement and social security law, as added by chapter 348 of the laws of 2000, is amended.
Justification
Currently, members of the public retirement system may buy back prior service credit with two years of credited service. Members in the public retirement system who wish to buy back military service credit cannot do so until they have five years in the system. This legislation gives those members the option to buy back their military time with two years of credited service.
