BILL NUMBER:S4682
Title of bill
An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system in the village of Bellerose, county of Nassau, as the "Police Officer Arthur Lopez Memorial Bridge"
Purpose or general idea of bill
The purpose of this bill is to memorialize the bridge on Jericho Turnpike, which crosses the Cross Island Parkway as the "Police Officer Arthur Lopez Memorial Bridge".
Summary of specific provisions
Section one of the bill adds a new section 343-xx to the Highway Law, which states that a portion of the state highway system will be designated as "Police Officer Arthur Lopez Memorial Bridge"
Section two states that the commissioner of transportation shall provide further installation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system as designated by section one of this act
Section three sets an immediate effective date.
Justification
The purpose of this bill is to designate the Jericho Turnpike bridge overpass, crossing over the Cross Island Parkway in Bellerose, New York, as the "Police Officer Arthur Lopez Memorial Bridge". Officer Lopez was a nine year veteran of the Nassau County Police Department and served with distinction. On October, 23, 2012, Officer Lopez, while working in the Nassau County Police Departments Emergency Service unit, was shot in the chest and killed by the subject of an investigation. Officer Lopez was only 29 years old and left behind a grieving family. His leadership and devotion to the police force is demonstrated by his assignment to one of the department's most elite units, the Emergency Services Unit, after only five years of service. Officer Lopez gave everything he had to the department and the citizens of Nassau County and ultimately made the supreme sacrifice. For the heroic actions he preformed, not only on that tragic day, but all the others acts of bravery he displayed each and every day, this memorial bridge should serve as a constant reminder of the this young officer's sacrifice.
