BILL NUMBER:S4806A

Title of bill

An act to amend the environmental conservation law, in relation to expanding the yearling buck protection program to a portion of an additional wildlife management unit

Purpose

To expand the yearling buck (Whitetail Deer) protection program, currently undertaken in parts of Sullivan, Ulster, and Orange Counties, to the portion of Wildlife Management Unit 7P in Chenango County.

Summary of provisions

Provides that taking antlered deer shall be prohibited in the portion of WMU 7P within Chenango County, except when an antlered deer is taken with at least one antler with at least three points; each point must be at least one inch measured from the main antler beam.

Justification

This will protect the majority of yearling bucks, 1.5 year old bucks with their first set of antlers, in Chenango County areas from harvest. This allows them to get older which means hunters see more bucks and harvest larger bucks.
