BILL NUMBER:S5322A
Title of bill
An act to amend the education law and the general munic- ipal law, in relation to plumbing and electrical work performed on school buildings in Nassau or Suffolk county
Purpose or general idea of the bill
The purpose of this bill is to ensure electrical and plumbing work done on school buildings is performed by licensed professionals if required by a local municipality in either Nassau or Suffolk county.
Summary of provisions
This bill adds a new section to Education Law, and amends the General Municipal Law, to require all plumbing and electrical work that is to be performed on any school building or appurtenant facility be completed by a licensed plumber or licensed electrician if required by the local municipality in Nassau or Suffolk county. The license does not need to be issued by the local municipality where the building or facility is located.
Justification
Electrical and plumbing Projects are expensive and have the potential to be dangerous if performed incorrectly. if the work is not done properly, it may cause harm to the students, school personnel, and the building itself.
This legislation would ensure that any electrical or plumbing work done to school buildings in Nassau or Suffolk county is carried out by licensed Professionals if required by the local municipality in Nassau or Suffolk county. This will save school districts money in the long run and lower property taxes, by helping to prevent the potential remedi- ation and liability resulting from shoddy work.
