BILL NUMBER:S5328
Title of bill
An act to amend the highway law, in relation to desig- nating that portion of New York state route 208 in the town of Shawan- gunk in Ulster county, state of New York as the "Edward S. Tucker Memo- rial Boulevard"
Purpose or general idea of bill
Designates a portion of New York State Route 208 in the Town of Shawan- gunk in Ulster County as the "Edward S. Tucker Memorial Boulevard."
Summary of specific provisions
Section 1. Amends the Highway Law by adding a new section 344-b which would designate the section of New York State Route 208 in the Town of Shawangunk in Ulster County, New York, from the intersection with Park Avenue to the intersection with Reservoir Road, as the "Edward S. Tucker Memorial Boulevard."
Section 2. Provides that the Commissioner of Transportation shall provide for the installation and maintenance of adequate signing as designated by section 1 of the bill. Further it provides that that designation created by section 1 of the bill shall be considered ceremo- nial in nature and the official name of the highway shall not be changed as a result of the act.
Section 3. Effective date.
Justification
On May 22, 2007, Edward S. Tucker, a retired Town of Shawangunk police officer who was at the time employed as a school crossing guard, was tragically struck by a vehicle and killed at the intersection of New York State Route 208 and Robinson Avenue in the Town of Shawangunk. This legislation designates that stretch of State Route 208 in recogni- tion of his service to the residents of the Town of Shawangunk as a police officer and his devotion to schoolchildren as a school crossing guard.
