BILL NUMBER:S5441B
Title of bill
An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system in the town of Tonawanda, county of Erie, as the "New York State Trooper Kevin P. Dobson, Sr. Memorial Bridge"
Purpose or general idea of bill
The purpose of this bill is to memorialize the bridge on Interstate 290, which crosses New York State Route 425 as the "New York State Trooper Kevin P. Dobson, Sr. Memorial Bridge".
Summary of specific provisions
Section one of the bill adds a new section 343-yy to the Highway Law, which states that a portion of the state highway system will be designated as "New York State Trooper Kevin P. Dobson, Sr. Memorial Bridge".
Section two states that the commissioner of transportation shall provide further installation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system as designated by section one of this act.
Justification
The purpose of this bill is to designate the 1-290 bridge overpass, crossing over New York Route 425 in Tonawanda, New York, as the "New York State Trooper Kevin P. Dobson, Sr. Memorial Bridge".
New York State Trooper Kevin Dobson, a 13-year veteran, was killed on the Youngman Highway in the Town of Tonawanda in March of 2011 in the line of duty. The accident came just three months after the state passed the "Move Over" law, which requires motorists to switch into the left lane when they see a law enforcement vehicle on the shoulder of a highway with its emergency lights activated. Trooper Kevin Dobson is remembered as a loving father and dedicated officer who was doing his duty to protect lives and our community.
