BILL NUMBER:S556
Title of bill
An act to amend the correction law, in relation to requiring sex offenders to register for life and eliminating the petition for relief
Purpose
To provide that all sex offenders be required to be on the registry for life.
Summary of provisions
This bill amends subdivision 1 of section 168 -h of the correction law to provide that sex offenders are registered for life. Section 2 of this bill amends subdivision 2 of section 168-0 of the correction law to allow sex offenders to petition the court to modify the level of notification and to eliminate the petition for relief from the registry.
Justification
Megan's Law and the New York State Sex Offender Registry have dramatically enhanced public access to information concerning the whereabouts of convicted sexual predators.
More improvements can be made to provide greater protection for our citizens, and particularly our children.
Sex Offenders have committed perverted acts against society including particularly our children. There is no reason that they should not be required to register for life.
Furthermore, the sex offender should not be allowed to be relieved of the duty to register.

None.
Effective date
This act shall take effect immediately and shall apply to all sex offenders registered or required to register immediately prior to the effective date of this act, or who are required to register on or after such date.
