BILL NUMBER:S6495
Title of bill
An act in relation to permitting the county of Suffolk to extend the real property tax payment deadline for the residents of the town of East Hampton
Purpose
Permits the County of Suffolk to extend the real property tax payment deadline for the town of East Hampton residents.
Summary of provisions
Notwithstanding the provisions of the Suffolk County Tax Act, this legislation permits the County of Suffolk to extend the real property tax payment deadline for residents of the Town of East Hampton by adopt- ing a Legislative Resolution.
Justification
A computer system error within the town of East Hampton's Tax Receiver's office prevented over 5,000 property tax bills from being sent out with ample time to make the January 10, 2014 payment deadline. This error was at no fault of Town residents and they should not be penalized for payments made after January 10, 2014. This legislation would authorize the County of Suffolk, by Legislative Resolution, to extend the real property tax payment deadline of January 10, 2014 to January 31, 2014, in the Town of East Hampton, and waive any interest and penalties which may be due or imposed on or before January 31, 2014. The County legisla- ture must pass a resolution adopting these provisions within thirty days following the date this becomes a law.
