BILL NUMBER:S6835
Title of bill
An act authorizing and directing the boards of trustees of SUNY and CUNY to review and revise the report of the New York State Governor's Task Force on Campus Fire Safety issued in July 2000
Purpose
The purpose of this bill is to direct the board of trustees of the state university of New York and the board of trustees of the city university of New York to review the report on campus fire safety produced in July 2000 and to update sections pertaining to the extent and adequacy of fire suppression and detection systems within the state and university systems.
Summary of specific provisions
None.
Justification
The New York State Governor's Task Force on Campus Fire Safety report incorporated short-term steps and long-terms steps for addressing the fire safety issues examined by the task force. The task force came to conclusions pertaining to fire suppression and detection systems on campus residential structures that stated that all newly-constructed college residential structures should be equipped with a full sprinkler system and that a phased retrofit program should be established to install sprinkler systems in all areas of existing campus residential structures during significant rehabilitation. This new legislation would allow the boards of trustees to review the report and attain information on whether the steps and recommendations such as the one-stated above were followed.
