BILL NUMBER:S7046

Title of bill

An act to amend the town law, in relation to the Caton fire district

Summary of provisions

Section 1 amends subdivision 11b of section 176 of the town law so members of the Caton fire department at a regular or special meeting of the department held after the month of April but prior to the month of November in any year may adopt a resolution that future meetings for the nomination of the chief and assistant chiefs be held on certain specified days. The Caton fire district may adopt a resolution to hold future meetings for nominations of chief and assistant chiefs, on the second Tuesday in December.

Section 2 provides the effective date.

Justification

It is undeniable that the services that fire districts provide in our communities are vital to the welfare and safety of our residents. On a continuous basis, the firefighters within these districts make important sacrifices in order to advance the public interest.

At a time when more and more rules, regulations and mandates are being put on volunteers by state and federal governments, this legislation would prevent these volunteers from making another trip to the fire station on a week night away from their families just to nominate (vote) a chief and assistant chief when there is almost never anyone running against them and by changing this date the voting for most of the offices could be done in one night.
