BILL NUMBER:S1442A
Title of bill
An act to amend the education law, in relation to central high school districts in the county of Suffolk
Purpose
Provides that the territory of certain central high school districts that merge in the county of Suffolk does not need to be contiguous.
Summary of provisions
Section 1912 of the Education Law is amended to provide that the formation of central high school districts in the county of Suffolk that may be formed by the combination of two or more of the following central, union free or common school districts in the county of Suffolk need not be contiguous: Montauk, Amagansett, East Hampton, East Moriches, Springs, Wainscott, Sagaponack, Bridgehampton, Sag Harbor, Southampton, Tuckahoe, Hampton Bays, Riverhead, Quogue, East Quogue, Westhampton Beach, and Remsenberg-Speonk.
Justification
Section 1912 of the education laws allows central high school districts in Suffolk County to be formed by the combination of two or more central, union free or common school districts. The current law, however, precludes districts whose territories are not contiguous from creating a central high school district. This bill provides that the following school districts within Suffolk County need not be contiguous to allow them to consider merging to create a central high school district: Montauk, Amagansett, East Hampton, East Moriches, Springs, Wainscott, Sagaponack, Bridgehampton, Sag Harbor, Southampton, Tuckahoe, Hampton Bays, Riverhead, Quogue, East Quogue, Westhampton Beach, and Remsenberg-Speonk.
